On Monday, September 9, the Frassati Catholic community welcomed renowned author and psychotherapist Tom Kersting to campus. Kersting is the author of the acclaimed book,
Disconnected: Reconnecting Our Digitally Distracted Kids, a focus of a parent book study that was offered last year. During his hour and a half talk with students, Kersting presented research and insights on the effects of technology on our brains and behaviors.
Kersting began his career as a school counselor and therapist almost twenty years ago and in 2007, he noticed an increase in students being diagnosed with anxiety, ADD, ADHD. That increase sparked Kersting's research into how technology might be affecting the mental health during adolescence.
For Frassati Catholic, bringing Kersting to campus was a way to serve our community and enlighten students on topics they are confronted with on a daily basis. One of the core elements of a Catholic education is the critical transmission of culture in light of faith. In a time where youth are inundated with technology posing challenges to proper understanding of culture and formation, thought leaders like Kersting provide tools for navigating the digital age.
