On December 12th, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, members of the World Language Club planned and led the entire school community in a celebration in her honor during Activity Period. The celebration began with a procession of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. While student musicians sang “La Guadalupana,” students followed the image carrying roses, one for each member of the Frassati Catholic community--an offering or “ofrenda” from each of us to Our Lady. After the procession, students gave a beautiful and informative presentation about Our Lady of Guadalupe, including video clips of the celebrations taking place at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe outside Mexico City. After praying a decade of the rosary, students celebrated with pan dulce, churros, and tamales.
It was a gift to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe together as a school as she is a model for us as we form students to be agents of change and build a culture worthy of the human person. Our Lady appeared to St. Juan Diego just twelve years after Cortés conquered Mexico and brought with him the first Christian missionaries. These missionaries struggled to attract the Aztec people to the religion of their conquerors, but within nine years of Our Lady’s visit to Mexico, nine million native people had become Christian. Through her gentle yet powerful visit to the humble Juan Diego, she brought light to a whole culture, transforming it into a culture of life. May our students do likewise.
