“From a young age I’ve always been a creative type,” says Jared Thome ’18, a rising sophomore studying architecture at Texas A&M University. “I’m continually interested in making things and now it’s something I get to do every day.” In his first year of study at Texas A&M, Thome was selected to join the exclusive Architecture Honors College and is now wrapping up a newly created summer internship where he spends his time helping two Texas A&M professors develop a college textbook on architecture.
Thome joined the Honors College during the spring semester after being selected by professors as one of only 13 freshmen to enter the demanding program. Thankfully, he was no stranger to hard work. Thome has always challenged himself academically. “At Frassati Catholic High School, I was fortunate to have a very rigorous academic experience,” said Thome. “I took all honors and AP courses while in high school, which really prepared me for architecture at Texas A&M. At Frassati Catholic I developed strong study habits and learned how to manage my workloads.” In fact, all his hard work paid off early when Texas A&M awarded him 12 hours of AP credit toward his core collegiate academic requirements. Receiving college credit for work he had done at Frassati Catholic freed Thome up to expand his course selection.
Adding to an already impressive start to his college career, Thome was selected for a new internship program where he contributes illustrations for an architecture textbook being authored by two of his professors. He spends his summer days working from home creating 3D models of buildings and then deconstructing them into 2D model-based construction plans. Once a week he travels to College Station to review the work with his professors.
“This is a brand-new internship program, and we’re all learning by working together and thinking through challenges with one another. I’ve learned a lot about being a professional and how my contributions to the work are made better by fostering a collaborative environment. I really feel like my experience in a founding class at Frassati Catholic helped prepare me to thrive in this internship.”
Thome credits his passion for architecture to both an innate desire to build and create as well as a course he took during his time at Frassati Catholic. “In my junior year I took AP Art History. One of the sections in that AP course was architecture,” said Thome. “I’d heard from others that architecture may be a field I’d enjoy, but that class set things in motion for me. I decided I’d apply for schools with architecture programs.”
Thome will complete his internship in August and return to Texas A&M in the fall to begin his sophomore year.
