Last Friday, Frassati Catholic alumnus Jack Edwards ’17 joined his fellow musicians in the University of Notre Dame's Totus Tuus Band for their biggest concert yet – opening for world-renowned Catholic Christian recording artist Matt Maher. Campus Ministry at Notre Dame had been looking for a big Christian artist to bring to campus and Matt Maher, a nine time GRAMMY nominee, prolific songwriter and touring musician, happened to be on tour and available for the performance. Edwards commented, “Booking Matt Maher was in itself a huge deal, but being asked to open for him was obviously the biggest thing our band had ever done.”
Totus Tuus is a praise and worship ensemble from Notre Dame that serves on campus by performing at praise and worship nights, residence hall Masses, Campus Ministry retreats, EXALT Adoration and more. Jack Edwards spoke to how performing for Matt Maher brought with it a new experience, “It’s different from playing as a part of worship, where Jesus is the main event, this time
we were front and center. The preparation was intense, but I think it improved our sound and our cohesion as bandmates. The show was great! It flew by, and I think we were more comfortable and passionate than we had ever been.”
The group spent time around Matt Maher and his band during soundcheck, the concert and after the performance. One of the most impactful elements of the experience for Jack, “What really impressed me was how much of a witness Matt was to the Catholic faith, even during the show, as in some of the quieter parts he talked about his life and what God had been teaching him. It was really humbling, and impressive too.” Jack’s time under the spotlight only helped to affirm his love for music, his faith life and the combination of the two in performance, “I definitely hope I can continue with music in some form or another after I graduate – there's really nothing like it.”
