In its inaugural season, the Frassati Catholic tackle football program has established a strong foundation under the guidance of head coach, Scot Mills.
The Falcons have played several established programs and gained valuable experience, which has enabled them to make mistakes early on in the season and correct them.
“I see playing established programs paying off for several reasons, but the most important reason is taught weekly with alignment and assignment,” said Mills. “The team knows that these alignment and assignment mistakes made earlier in the season cost big plays and hurt the outcome of some games. As we continue to play, we are making less mistakes and have begun to play some good football.”
It has been a year of firsts for the program – the first practice, the first game, and memorably, the first touchdown against John Cooper JV on August 25. The PA announcer at John Cooper recognized the team’s achievement over the loudspeakers to commemorate the moment.
A central focus this season has been developing a culture and style of play that is unique to the school. Mills has emphasized “being confident and physical” both in practices and in games.
“I want the team to carry itself in a way that others want to be a part of the atmosphere they bring,” said Mills. “I plan on having workouts for the offseason with the boys who do not participate in other sports, and have begun preparing summer 7 on 7 games.”
The Falcons have also had the opportunity to play several games at home this season, taking full advantage of the facilities available in the new Student Life Building, including home and visiting locker rooms and a training room.
“Having a couple of home games has been a blessing to this team,” said Mills. “I could see the pride they had on their faces and the excitement they had in their eyes when their parents and peers began to show up. We have had great support at home. The atmosphere is exciting and makes me excited for our first Friday night game.”
On Monday, the Falcons recorded their second win of the season, defeating Pasadena First Baptist 28-0 to improve to 2-3 on the season. The Falcons will close out the season on the road against Northland Christian on October 13 and Lutheran South on October 20.
There is plenty of potential for growth next season as the school welcomes another new class of students who will be eligible to participate. Next season, the team will again play at the JV level in anticipation of playing under Friday night lights as a varsity program in the fall of 2018.
