Following their top ratings at the regional competition, five students from Frassati Catholic High School were recently awarded Superior Ratings at the Texas Private School Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble State Competition. The competition, held at The John Cooper School, requires students to sing a solo piece from a predetermined, leveled list of classical vocal repertoire.
"I could not be more proud of these five young women," stated director and Fine Arts department chair Lindsay Medina. "Each of these students sang a level 1 piece. This is legitimate, challenging, classical vocal literature featuring a variety of musical periods, styles, and languages. The girls dedicated countless hours to learning the pronunciation, perfecting the musical nuances, and performing with confidence."
This was Frassati Catholic High School's first time competing in the TPSMEA State Solo and Ensemble competition.
In addition to the five superior ratings, Megan Angelo and Kayla Auza received the coveted Judge's Award of Distinction for Outstanding Soloists. "To receive such prestigious awards at their first time competing in the state competition shows the dedication of these founding students. They are constantly seeking to better themselves in all that they do, and I am overwhelmed by their talent and love of music."
The students and the pieces that they performed are as follows: Megan Angelo - "Stizzozo, mio stizzozo" from La serva Padrona, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi Kayla Azua - "Sweet Suffolk Owl," Richard Hundley Diana Davis - "Pie Jesu" from Requiem, Gabriel Faure Amanda Heinzler - "I Attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly," Henry Purcell Catherine Markus - "Les berceaux," Gabriel Faure
