The Frassati Falcons Blue Volleyball team defeated the Providence Classical School Paladins Tuesday afternoon in a closely contested five-set match to improve to 6-1.
The Falcons got off to a strong start by winning the first set 25-19, before the Paladins rallied to take the second. "The second game, Providence really got their heads back in the game. They are a very good team and were very well-coached," said Falcons head coach, Katie Hoff.
After losing the second set, the Falcons regained their composure to win the third. "They did a good job of refocusing and coming back and starting over after that second game loss," said Hoff. The Paladins, however, refused to go down without a fight, and won the fourth set to force the match into a fifth and final set.
The Paladins started strong and seized a 13-8 lead. The Falcons battled back, winning five consecutive points to tie it at 13-13 thanks to strong serving by sophomores Margarita Caceres and Reagan Nicholson. The Paladins won the next point to take a 14-13 lead before the Falcons and sophomore Ireland Thormodsgaard won three consecutive points to win the set 16-14 and defeat the Paladins.
The Falcons showed their character and determination in grinding out a five-set win: "They just decided to get gritty. They were able to capitalize on a few mistakes that Providence made," said Hoff. "They really hung in there together...I told them at the end I was super proud of them for fighting and for not wanting to just quit, especially down five points there at the end."
With Tuesday's win, the Falcons Blue team improved to 6-1 on the season. The Blue team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night (9/5) to a strong Spring High School squad. The Falcons Blue team will play in The Woodlands Preparatory Round Robin on Saturday (9/13) at The Woodlands Preparatory campus.
