The Falcons Cross Country team had a strong showing in its opening meet on Saturday, Aug. 29, finishing second overall at the Incarnate Word Academy Invitational hosted at the Houston Amateur Sports Park. Sophomore Alex De la Maza finished in second place overall with a time of 11:55. Freshman Nathan Hardham and sophomore Cameron Gill also finished in the top ten with times of 12:34 and 12:39. All seven Falcon runners finished in the top half of the field of 87 finishers.
“I was very pleased with our team’s strong showing at the meet and the positive image that they portrayed while competing for our school,” said Falcons coach, Ralph Maddelana. “Our team finished 2nd overall in the standings and had 3 runners who earned individual awards for finishing in the top 10.”
While the team’s performance was an encouraging start, Maddalena stressed that the team is already looking ahead to improving their times at the next meet: “We will stay focused on continuous improvement and must keep working hard on conditioning for when the races increase in distance as the season progresses.”
Next up for the Cross Country team is the Cooper Dragon Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Burroughs Park in Spring, TX.
