Frassati Catholic High School Chess Team Second in All-Region Tournament
Frassati Catholic High School’s Chess team competed in the Cardinal DiNardo All-Region chess tournament on May 5 at St. Theresa Catholic School in Sugar Land, TX. The team placed second in the Houston-area high school division. Individual awards went to two team members: Robert Beaujean placed second and Andrew Pye placed fourth.
The chess team’s members who competed at the tournament are: seniors Marvin Townsend, Josh Elegado, Conlan Taylor, Larry Palma, and freshmen Andrew Pye and Robert Beaujean. Each played five games, and the total number of team wins was 18 of their combined 30 games.
Club sponsor Debbie Sheridan reflects on the team’s greatest achievement: “I am proud of the accomplishments of these young men…what touched me most, though, was…their camaraderie at the tournament…[they] would return from a game, win or lose, and sit with the opponent, now a new friend…laughing, joking, and analyzing the game.” When asked to comment on playing chess at that level, the team members joked with each other (they call Andrew “π”) and gave advice: “Never give up against a higher rated opponent;” “Make ‘em work for that checkmate;” and “Play to the end.”
