The Frassati Catholic Volleyball team has started strong this season, achieving a state ranking and going undefeated to open district play.
The Falcons, currently 13-6-1 and ranked #9 in the state in the latest TAPPS poll, started the season with some tough competition, dropping hard-fought matches against several 4A teams: The Woodlands Christian Academy, Northland Christian, and Cypress Christian.
The early experience against some of the top local teams is now paying dividends. The Falcons won the Baytown Christian tournament in mid-August and have gone unbeaten to start TAPPS district play.
"Not only are we a perfect 4-0, we have not dropped a set in district," said Head Coach Katie Hoff. " We spend lots of practice time on defense and serving. Our offense has been a fun combination of power and finesse -- we can swing really hard, but have also been able to find open spots in our opponents' defense with well-placed tips and roll shots. A key to our future success is to keep our own errors down, and develop our set selection and decision-making on offense."
Last year, the Falcons won the regular season District Championship and, in the postseason, won their TAPPS Area Championship match. This year, the team returns a number of starters from last season's run. That experience, combined with the solid play of several new additions, has seen the Falcons again get off to a strong start in district play.
"Our team is still quite young," said Hoff. "But they benefitted from our playoff run last year, as returners Rachael Demarais, GraceAnne Kloesel, Mia Agana, and Clare Finney talk often about achieving goals, playing through tough spots, and sticking together as a team; things they experienced first hand last year in the post season."
The Falcons have four district games remaining, with key matchups against Rosehill Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 3 and Legacy Christian on Oct. 5. The Falcons will celebrate Senior Night at home on Tuesday, Oct. 10 against Brazos Christian.
"We're expecting great things in the second half of district and beyond," said Hoff. "Our goal is to play in November at the State Tournament."
