The Frassati Catholic track and field team competed at the TAPPS 5A District 7 Meet hosted at Fort Bend Christian Academy, April 10 - 11. Members of the team took home three gold medals at the event and five top four finishes overall. The team delivered many personal bests and four Frassati Catholic student athletes will advance to the TAPPS South Regional Track Meet on Thursday, April 25.
Junior Izabella Vallejo won both the 3200M and the 800M. Sophomore Annie Abrams took first in the 400M. Junior Alyssa Lopez took third in the 300M Hurdles and Freshman Zamari Bruce finished fourth in the 110M Hurdles. All four athletes will move on to the South Regional Championships.
This has been a strong season for Frassati Catholic and impressive given a move from TAPPS 3A to TAPPS 5A competition this year. Speaking about the District meet, head coach Mark Pertuso reflected, “It was a hot and humid day but our student athletes did very well. We had a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores competing against Juniors and Seniors from heavily competitive 5A schools like Lutheran South, Fort Bend Christian and Westbury Christian. We’re proud of all the personal records many of our athletes had. We’re lucky to have four athletes move on to Regionals and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can do on April 25.”
When asked about his team’s development throughout the season, coach Pertuso said, “There was a lot of work put in throughout the course of the season, especially perfecting running form. A lot of the students that joined us this year had never run before. So all the progress they made says a lot about their effort and our team.”
The 2019 TAPPS 5A South Regional Track Meet will be held at Bastrop Memorial Stadium in Cedar Creek on Thursday, April 25.
