Frassati Catholic High School’s golf teams returned to Glen Rose, TX for the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 3A State Championship tournament April 23-24. Sophomore Anna Claire Fincher defended her 2017 gold medal, shooting par on both days of the tournament to bring home the state champion title. Senior Hunter Thomas won the silver medal at the tournament in the boys’ division.
Fincher, along with Junior Irma Briz, fellow sophomore Morgan Martinez, and freshman Natalia del Olmo combined together to secure a second place team finish. Fincher, Briz, and del Olmo were all named to First Team All-State for Girls’ Golf.
Fincher, reflecting on her involvement in the program said, “It has been an honor to play on the Frassati Catholic golf team my first two years. With the support of the Frassati community and especially my fellow team members, my confidence has exponentially grown and allowed me to win state for the second year.” On playing golf with the team at this tournament she states, “Unlike the common spectator sports, golf is an equal balance of both physical ability and mental control. Playing at the state tournament was a challenge for us all, but one with deserving results.”
For the boys’ team, Thomas and his teammates: senior Pablo Boada, juniors Connor Ellis and Ethan Long, and sophomore Levi van Ryder finished second place overall. Thomas earned a place on First Team All-State for Boys’ Golf.
Senior Hunter Thomas reflected on the season saying, “Everyone worked so hard this year and drove one another to play better and practice harder, and we really saw that at state…[our team] played our hearts out ‘til the last putt dropped…I’m so proud of everyone.” Frassati Catholic High School will be in TAPPS 5A next year, and sophomore Anna Claire Fincher acknowledges, “Going into state, I realized it would be a test of endurance for our young golf program. Given the conditions and extreme pressure, I am very proud of our boys’ and girls’ golf team for their second place finishes. I think…we’ll be ready for 5A.”
