On August 9, members of the sophomore class at Frassati Catholic High School gathered on campus for the school’s inaugural Leadership Day. Students participated in vibrant discussions on the qualities of a true leader, and were challenged to model these qualities in the activities throughout the day, the highlight of which was a team scavenger hunt across the campus.
“The one thing I kept repeating throughout the day was that leaders listen,” said Luke Slonkosky, Assistant Principal of Student Life. “Before they speak, before they act, before they make a choice that impacts the group, they have to receive the input from everyone involved…their authority and influence exists only if they listen. If they don’t, they are no longer a leader, but someone with a title.”
A majority of the sophomore class was in attendance. The sophomores experienced the benefits of brainstorming and the value of gathering each person’s input, essential when laying the foundation at a new school. The Leadership Day also stressed the importance of selflessness and leadership by example.
True servant leadership is a theme, Slonkosky stressed, that will continue throughout the school year: “Not only do leaders listen, but a leader chooses to work for the good of the other - someone outside themselves. So for future events, we’ll definitely address it while we’re preparing for and when we’re reflecting on the event.”
