Season Recap: Swimmers medal at State Competition

The Falcons Swim team sent 18 swimmers to the State Meet this season, the most in the program’s history. Two swimmers also medaled at the State Competition for the first time.

“There were many highlights this season for me,” said Falcons head coach Stephen Schmidt. “The Houston Regional meet was probably the standout, to have so many kids compete and make state, and for them to put up such a strong showing in our division, with both the boys and girls teams placing in the top three overall teams. That was a great moment.”

This season saw the swim team continue to grow, both in size and experience. Last year, the team had nine swimmers; this year, 22 students represented the school. This was also the first year that the team had boys’ relays.

"It has been great as a coach to see young and old swimmers alike be leaders on the team and help others as swimmers and team mates," said Schmidt. "We have a wide variety of experience on the team, but everyone had personal victories on the team this year, whether it has been learning a new stroke, achieving a personal best time, or excelling in an event that they never thought was a strength."

While the team trains off campus at Swim Streamline in Northampton, the school’s new athletic facilities provide a huge boost to the athletes and coaches.

"Being able to use the training facilities was a plus for the team, and the swimmers were very glad about being able to use locker rooms at school before going to practice,” said Schmidt. “We had a pool to ourselves this year at Northhampton, which we quickly filled with athletes.”

Next season, the team will return all but three athletes, and looks to be set to again compete at a high level come November.

“The team has changed significantly over the past two years," said Schmidt. "The program has really come alive, and to see a pool full of Frassati swimmers was a great feeling. The team has had some strong leadership from its upperclassmen, and more than half the team were freshmen and sophomores, which created a spirit of enthusiasm, with so much to look forward to. We hope that next year we can build off the growth of the team to become even more competitive, and look to have some swimmers compete in some new events."
