Season Recap: Girls Soccer completes inaugural season

Girls soccer completed its inaugural season in 2016-17, playing at the TAPPS varsity level for the first time. While the team didn’t qualify for the district playoffs, it will return almost its entire roster next season; only senior Ireland Thormodsgaard will graduate.

For a very young team, the Falcons remained competitive in most of their games. Bolstered by a strong defense - anchored by goalkeeper Ariana Dale ’20 - the the team played in several close games, falling six times by two goals or fewer.

The team concluded the season on an encouraging note, picking up a victory against Lutheran High North on an emotional Senior Night, with goals by Ana Carrera '20 and Alyssa Lopez '20.

“It was a very special night,” said Head Coach Julio Marino. “The team worked so hard to get its first victory of the season.”

This season, the focus was on laying the groundwork for the program for years to come. The signs are encouraging that the girls soccer program will develop into a competitive force in the district going forward.

“We have a strong basis for next season,” said Marino. "To coach the girls during the program’s first season was a great privilege. With only one senior, this group had an excellent season competing against teams with more experience.
While the team began the season needing some technical work, as the season went on we consistently improved and we finished with tremendous passion for continuing to grow as a team and as individual players. Our goal this season was to learn and establish a system of play, develop tactical discipline, and have fun - and I think we accomplished that.”
