Three years ago, Head Girls Basketball Coach Nick Isaac asked his team to buy into an approach that stressed working on fundamentals at the present to lay the foundation to compete and win in the future. This year, the third year of Isaac's plan, the pieces began to fall into place and the hard work began to pay off. The team won the TAPPS 3A Bi-District Championship, achieved a TAPPS Top 10 state ranking every week of the season, and hit the 20-win mark to record the most successful season in the program's history.
“This year’s basketball season was a lot of fun and very exciting for us,” said Isaac. “We have a great group of girls who work extremely hard, love each other and have great team chemistry.”
The Falcons finished the season with a 20-9 record. They defeated Brownsville First Baptist in the opening round of the TAPPS Tournament before falling to eventual semifinalists Temple Central Texas Christian in the 2nd round.
The team will return most of its starters next season, losing only two players to graduation: Johanna Kloesel and Sarah Biagiotti. Kloesel finished her career with 1,009 points over her four years, and earned 1 st Team All-District Honors this season.
Alexandra Wainright ’20, Mia Romero ’19, Grace Ann Kloesel ’20, Kathryn Parker ’20, Gianna Airola ’19, and Angela Webb ’19 also made the All-District team.
This season, for the first time, the basketball teams had a home. Both Boys and Girls Basketball played in the school’s new gymnasium, which can hold up to 700 fans, and utilized the school’s new weight room and locker rooms.
“Playing in our new gym was great,” said Isaac. “Having a consistent court to practice on and your own personal team locker room before and after games made a big difference in our daily routines. Home games also felt like true home games. The atmosphere with our crowd and student section was awesome!”
Next season, optimism will again be high. With so many returning starters, the Falcons will hope to make a deep run in the postseason come tournament time.
This summer, the basketball progam will be conducting camp for students in grades 3-9 from June 5 - 9. Click here for more information about the camp.
