Season Recap: Boys Basketball makes district playoffs

“This was the year that the boys varsity basketball team truly became competitive,” said Falcons Head Basketball Coach Chris Meredith.

For the Falcons Boys Basketball team, 2016-17 was a season of growth. The season began with the team's sights set on making the postseason for the first time as a program; it ended having accomplished just that.

The team finished 16-16 overall, qualifying for the TAPPS 3A playoffs for the first time. It was a memorable season of even more firsts: the first games in the new gymnasium; the first seniors on the team; and the first tournament win.

“The past few years, our teams always played hard and had great attitudes,” said Meredith. “This year the team continued to do that, but also learned what it meant to truly compete. As the year went on, we grew more and more confident, and multiple players began to step up and make the plays necessary to actually win the game as opposed to just keeping it close.”

Much of the team’s success can be attributed to its reliance on so many different players to contribute.

“This team was truly a team in every sense of the word,” said Meredith. “Our scoring was more balanced than any team I have ever coached. We averaged 50 points a game, yet no single player averaged in double digits for the season. However, we had 8 different players score 12 or more points in at least one or more games. Each player put the good of the team ahead of themselves.”

A total of seven players made the TAPPS All-District team. Broderick Hogan ’18 and Mark Hill ’18 received Honorable Mention; J.T. Payne ’17, Matt Macora ’17, and Grant Guidry ’20 received Second Team honors; and J.D. Morgan ’19 and Josh Duhon ’17 received First Team honors.
