The Frassati Catholic Government and Debate Club attended the Youth In Government State Conference on Saturday, February 1, in Austin, Texas. Four Frassati Catholic students were honored as Top Delegates, a group of just over a dozen award recipients chosen from the nearly 200 students in attendance at the conference.
Junior Zach Harrison and Seniors John Druzbik, Grace Ann Fruge, and Adam Sucy, were given Top Delegate honors. Additionally, Zach Harrison led a policy proposal which earned the highest overall score out of 103 proposals debated in committee, and with fellow club members, Juniors Annie Nguyen and Gabby Yabut, went on to pass in General Assembly. Grace Ann Fruge was awarded Outstanding Club Leader from the State Office at the conference.
Club leader Mr. Stephen Schmidt spoke about the group’s success, “Our students were outstanding. Throughout the conference I got feedback from both the adult evaluators and the students serving as elected officials commending the character of our delegates. I couldn’t be more proud of their efforts.”
Schmidt highlighted the role the Frassati Catholic curriculum plays in student performance in events like this conference, “Frassati Catholic students represent their values in situations like these. That’s what is really unique about our students – they bring their values to the table in a way that’s both sincere and true to the culture of life we promote on campus. What makes the difference is that our students have a background in ethics that forms the basis of everything they do. The average Frassati Catholic student is so well versed in ethics and philosophy that by the time they get to our club they’re ready to apply everything they’ve learned.”
“We’re so proud of the entire Government and Debate Club,” said Schmidt. “Every single member made an impact, and their abilities affirm our values and institutional mission.”
