The Frassati Falcons girls basketball team won the Baytown Christian JV tournament this past weekend in Baytown, TX, recording wins over Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School (MKCHS), First Baptist Christian Academy (FBCA), and Christian Home School Athletics (CHSA).
The Falcons convincingly won their opener 39-10 over MKCHS led by sophomores Johanna Kloesel (8 points) and Maria Canedo (14 points), and freshman Emily Sturek (8 points).
The Falcons were tested in their second game against FBCA, and faced an 18-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. At that point, Falcons Head Coach, Nick Isaac, implemented a full-court press that resulted in a 21-2 Falcons run and a one-point lead. FBCA tied the game up with a free throw at the end of regulation to force overtime. The Falcons built on their fourth quarter momentum and outscored the Warriors by four in extra time to win 52-48 and advance to the championship game against CHSA. “They went out there and executed and gave everything they had and left nothing in the tank,” said Isaac. Canedo was key to the Falcons rally, scoring 17 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter. Kloesel finished the game with 18 pts.
In the championship game, CHSA scored immediately after the tipoff, but the Falcons fought back to build a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter sparked by three 3-pointers by sophomore, Reagan Nicholson. “Once we got the lead, we never gave it back,” said Isaac. The Falcons went on to defeat the Wolverines 49-37 to take the team’s first-ever tournament championship. Nicholson finished with 11 points and Kloesel led the team with 30. “For me, it was really cool to see the girls come together,” said Isaac, commenting on the growing confidence of his team as they progressed in the tournament. “We have a group that, regardless of what the score is, is still willing to fight and still believe they can still get the job done.” Both Canedo and Kloesel were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Falcons will continue to work to improve as the season progresses, said Isaac: “Our focus all year has been getting better every time you step on the court, whether it’s a practice or a game.” Next up for the Falcons is a match-up against the Sports Association of Texas for Christian Homeschoolers (SATCH) at Legends Sports Complex on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
