Falcons Girls Basketball Recap

The Frassati Falcons Girls Basketball team finished its season on Feb. 12 with a win over Christian Homeschool Sports Ministries (CHSM). Head Coach Nick Isaac led the Falcons to a 17-8 overall record in his first year at Frassati Catholic.

The team, composed of freshmen and sophomores, got off to a slow start, losing three of its first four games. The team’s performance in the Baytown Christian JV tournament in November, however, sparked a string of wins and renewed confidence.

“After that tournament, we started taking a turn,” said Isaac. “That’s when we knew we could do something special this season.”

In the semi-final of the tournament, the Falcons found themselves down 18 points heading into the fourth quarter against First Baptist Christian Academy (FBCA). The team went on a 21-2 run and came back to win in overtime. “They kept fighting,” said Isaac. “They have a refuse to lose mentality.” The Falcons went on to defeat CHSA to take the team’s first-ever tournament championship.

With the tournament victory, the team began to not only believe in themselves, but also in the system and approach implemented by Isaac. “I think they did a really good job of buying in,” he said, “And that was big to our success.”

The team’s rematch against SATCH in February provided another highlight, with the Falcons demonstrating their progress throughout the season as they avenged their earlier loss. “They were the most excited winning that game than any other we won all year,” said Isaac.

While the Falcons finished with a winning record, Isaac stressed that the focus for the team was never just about the score: “We never put an emphasis on winning games. It was always about getting better and learning the game of basketball.”

Next season, the team plans to play a 2A varsity district schedule as a member of TAPPS. While the competition will change, said Isaac, the team’s approach will not: “We want to keep the same mentality to get better every day and give ourselves the best possible chance to win games.”
