SPRING — Diana Davis, a junior at Frassati Catholic High School, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award — the highest honor in Girl Scouting. The award recognizes girls in freshmen through senior year who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Less than 5 percent of Girl Scouts earn the award.
After being inspired by the “Last to Leave Home,” a book that describes the journey of a family living with a son born with Down Syndrome, Davis decided to focus her award project on children living with the genetic disorder. With assistance from more than 15 volunteers, Davis partnered with the Down Syndrome Association of Houston to host a kite decorating and flying event for children and their families served by the organization. The event was held on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21 and more than 150 people attended.
“I wanted to help others realize that people with disabilities need to be embraced for who they are rather than being excluded or discriminated and things society labels a disability can really be someone’ s greatest ability,” Davis said. “Sometimes life’s greatest joys come from the most unexpected places.”
Davis said earning the Gold Award was important to her because she is constantly challenging herself to set high goals.
“This accomplishment has set a new standard for my future and I will continue to push myself further,” Davis said.
