De la Maza Named TAPPS 3A Male Athlete of the Year
SPRING, Texas, (June 18, 2018) – Frassati Catholic High School graduate Alex de la Maza has been recognized by the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) as Athlete of the Year. Every year, TAPPS selects a male and female athlete of the year for each of its six classifications; de la Maza received the award for males in the 3A class.
De la Maza’s running career at Frassati Catholic is marked by a number of championships and awards. This year, Alex was State Champion in Cross Country, the 1600M, and the 3200M. In the Fall, he won the TAPPS 3A Cross Country State Championship with a time that was almost a minute faster than the next runner. In recognition of his achievement, Alex was voted as the private school Houston-Area Cross Country Runner of the Year for VYPE magazine and signed with the University of St. Thomas to run Cross Country.
“I was pretty shocked to win the TAPPS Athlete of the Year award. I was not expecting this at all,” said de la Maza. “I am extremely thankful for everyone that has helped me throughout my journey that has enabled me to continue to pursue my athletic and academic career at the University of St. Thomas.”
“We are very proud of Alex and his accomplishments during his four years at Frassati Catholic, and wish him continued success in his collegiate career,” added Athletic Director Chris Meredith.
