The Falcons Cross Country team continues to turn in strong performances, with competitive outings at both the Rosehill Christian Meet and the Incarnate Word Academy Invitational.
At the Rosehill Christian Meet last Saturday, Sept. 9, the Varsity Boys (6th place team) were led by Alex de la Maza’s 2nd place finish which included a field of 63 competitors.
In the Girls Varsity race, Mia Romero (39th) and Alyssa Lopez (42nd) led the girls to a 7th place team finish in a field of 73 runners.
The Falcons opened their season at the Incarnate Word Academy Invitational Cross Country meet at the Willow Waterhole in Houston on Saturday, Aug. 19. Despite extremely hot and humid conditions, and a very rugged 2 mile course, the Boys and Girls teams placed 4th and 7th in their races against a field of 12 Houston area teams.
Alex de la Maza ran away from 87 other competitors and took first place in the Boys varsity race by over 100 meters, with a winning time of 10:18. Cameron Gill turned in a strong 24th place performance with a time of 12:10.
The Girls Varsity team was led by the trio of Alyssa Lopez (26th) Mia Romero (32nd) and Ava Romero (36th) who ran close together for most of the race.
"Our teams fared really well against some tough competition and extreme weather conditions," said Head Coach Ralph Maddalena. "We have our largest team ever this year and I am excited by the early performances and the depth we have which extends well into our Junior Varsity squads. I am looking forward to another successful Cross Country season."
