For the second season in a row, the Falcons Boys Basketball team will head to the TAPPS postseason tournament. The Falcons finish the regular season second in the district, with a 5-3 district record and a 17-9 overall record.
The Falcons have been led by the leadership of three seniors: Joseph Almond, John Wittmer, and Broderick Hogan. Yet what stands out about this year's team is the depth and the competition for starting roles in every position.
"This year we had several new players as well as some returning players who stepped into new roles," said Head Coach Chris Meredith. "This was by far the deepest team that we have ever had. We had at least 9 or 10 players play in almost every game. We also have five players averaging 9 or more points per game. Our depth and emphasis on getting up and down the floor quickly seemed to have an effect on teams in the 2nd half of games."
The focus for the team heading into playoffs, according to Meredith, will be defense.
"As we move into the playoffs, we feel we have a team that is good enough to compete against anyone we might face. However, we will be focused on just the first game in front of us because all of the schools that made the playoffs have good teams. A big focus for us will be our defense. If we can have a good effort defensively, then we should have a chance to win against whomever the opponent is."
The team will host The Christian School at Castle Hills on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Frassati Catholic Gymnasium. Students from any middle school or current Frassati Catholic students who wear a spirit shirt will get a free popcorn.
"This Saturday is our first ever home playoff game for basketball," said Meredith. "There is nothing like the excitement of a playoff basketball game when there is a big crowd. The Christian School at Castle Hills is a very good team with a tradition as a winning program. We will need all the help we can get from our fans to help make it a home court advantage for our team. It would be exciting to make history by getting the program's first ever playoff win here in our own gym."
