WACO, Texas -- Alex de la Maza '18 flew to his first Cross Country State Championship on Monday, beating his nearest competitor by 56 seconds, and finishing the 5000M race in 17:15, a 5:33/mile pace.
After finishing in second place last year, de la Maza committed to reaching the top spot this season, and his hard work paid off.
His strong performance on the Boys side set the tone for the Falcons, who finished in third place as a team behind The Covenant School and Cristo Rey Jesuit, both out of Dallas.
Cameron Gill '18 finished 18th with a time of 19:40; Mark Morrison '20 was not far behind, finishing 20th with a time of 19:44; Marius Sanford '21 and John Paul Bartsch '19 also both finished in the top 40, with times of 20:24 and 20:31. Larry Palma '18 and Carl Heinzler '18 finished 84th and 89th with times of 22:19 and 22:41.
On the girls side, the team was led by a strong performance from Alyssa Lopez '20 with a time of 14:40 in the 2-mile race to finish 15th overall. Mia Romero '19 finished 22nd in 15:04, Ava Romero '21 finished 30th followed closely by Denise Simon '21 with times of 15:21 and 15:23. Lauren Reynolds '20 and Gianna Airola '19 finished 54th and 55th in 16:54 and 16:58.
The strong performances by the groups secured a third place finish for the Falcons behind Central Texas Christian from Temple and The Covenant School out of Dallas.
