Frassati Catholic High School Uniform Philosophy
The primary purpose of Frassati Catholic High School’s uniform is to help our students grow intellectually in habits of ordered, logical thinking. School uniforms also have a corollary effect in social growth as well, in that uniforms can help students get to know each other for who they really are rather than just for the kind of tennis shoes they wear. The school uniform also serves to unify the student body, becoming an outward sign of the common mission and purpose of Frassati Catholic.
Frassati Catholic High School’s philosophy that underlies our school dress code is based on the nature of the human person, a mysterious and wonderful union of body and soul. This union is such that our body influences our soul and vice versa. For example, when our body is in pain, it can have a marked effect on our mood and outlook; and when our soul is troubled with anxieties and worry, our body can become tense and suffer many aches and pains. Alternatively, your body can feel very tired, but then suddenly experience a rush of energy because a good friend invites you to a party. The interplay between body and soul is also experienced in how we clothe the body.
How we dress our bodies can influence the powers of our soul, particularly the intellectual power to a certain degree. When we dress more formally, for example, our manners tend also to follow suit and we use a heightened diction in our speech and are more refined in our actions. It is interesting to note that recent studies
show that students whose dress is orderly, neat, and sharp tend to be more orderly and sharp in their thinking also.
Another angle to consider: we take sports seriously. That means we outfit ourselves in the best athletic gear to perform in that sport, wearing for example, the latest and greatest athletic shoe for basketball or volleyball or football. Imagine if an athlete were to show up on the basketball court with flip flops or wingtips or high heels. This would show that he or she is not serious about the game. The same is true for school. We take school seriously. Our clothes say that. We don’t show up (most of the time) in jeans or sweat pants or gym shoes, because we are concerned in this instance with intellectual conditioning not physical.
Our school uniform reflects the spirit of Frassati Catholic and the seriousness with which we pursue intellectual excellence. Our approach to academic excellence is not sloppy or haphazard; neither is our dress code. Our students strive for order and precision in their thinking. Their clean, crisp, and sharp school uniform should reflect and support this goal.
